Sunshine, Smiles, and First-Day Success: 5 Tips for Prepping for School or Preschool at The Village!

Summer is in full swing here in California, PA, and while we’re all enjoying the longer days and warm weather, many families are also thinking ahead to a big milestone: the first day of school or preschool! Whether your little one is just starting their journey with us at The Village or transitioning to a new classroom, a little preparation can go a long way in making that first day a smooth and happy one for everyone.

At The Village, we believe in nurturing the whole child, and that includes ensuring a positive and confident start to their early learning experience. Here are 5 tips to help you and your child get ready for their exciting new adventure with us:

1. Talk About It (Early and Often!)

Start the conversation about school or preschool weeks before it begins. Use positive and exciting language. Talk about all the fun things they’ll do: playing with new toys, making new friends, singing songs, and learning with their teachers. You can say things like, “Soon you’re going to go to The Village, where you’ll get to play on the big playground and paint amazing pictures!” Reading books about starting school can also be a wonderful way to introduce the concept and address any little worries they might have.

2. Establish a “School Day” Routine

Children thrive on predictability. Gradually adjust your child’s sleep and meal schedules to align with their new school or preschool routine. If our naptime is at 1 PM, try to shift their at-home nap closer to that time. Practice your morning routine: getting dressed, eating breakfast, and packing their backpack. The more familiar these rhythms become, the more secure your child will feel on their first day.

3. Practice Independence Skills

Our dedicated teachers at The Village are here to support your child’s growth, and fostering a little independence can truly help. Encourage your child to practice self-help skills like putting on their shoes, washing their hands, and helping to put away toys. These small victories build confidence and empower them in their new environment.

4. Visit and Familiarize (If Possible!)

If you haven’t already, take advantage of any opportunities to visit The Village with your child before their official start date. Walk through their classroom, explore the playground, and let them meet some of their new teachers. Familiarity reduces anxiety and helps them feel more comfortable when the big day arrives. We want our center to feel like a second home, and these visits are a great first step!

5. Create a Loving Goodbye Ritual & Trust the Process

A consistent and comforting goodbye routine can make all the difference. This could be a special hug, a quick kiss, or a secret handshake. Keep it brief and positive, letting your child know you’ll be back to pick them up after their fun day. It’s completely normal for both parents and children to feel a mix of emotions on the first day – excitement, a little sadness, and maybe even a few tears. Rest assured, our experienced staff at The Village are experts at helping children transition and will provide a nurturing and engaging environment for your little one to thrive.

We are so excited to welcome your family to The Village this school year and beyond! With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to a smooth and joyful start to their school or preschool journey.
