Celebrating The Newly Renovated and Expanded Rutledge Institute

The ribbon is cut, the paint is dry, and a bright new chapter has officially begun! On Friday, September 25, we joined together to celebrate the grand reopening of the Rutledge Institute for Early Childhood Education at PennWest California.

From an initial 1,800 square feet to a state-of-the-art 14,000-square-foot facility, this expansion represents far more than extra square footage. It features brand-new classrooms, a STEM lab, an art studio, a library, and a dedicated children’s kitchen, creating an inspiring environment where enrollment can grow from 32 to 80 children.

Above all, this milestone is a testament to what is possible when vision, generosity, and community collaboration come together.

Driven by Vision and Generosity

This dream became reality thanks to the extraordinary generosity and unwavering vision of Tom and Karen Rutledge. Their support funded this expansive renovation, building on years of life-changing support for local children and PennWest early childhood education scholars. Their belief in early education as the foundation for lifelong success continues to transform lives across our region.

Bringing this vision to life required strong leadership on the ground. Under the guidance and direction of Cherie Sears, President of The Village and The Rutledge Institute, our team has kept the focus where it belongs: elevating the early childhood profession, supporting our educators, and providing best-practices-based care for our youngest learners.

Built on Collaboration and Partnership

A project of this scale truly takes a village. We extend our deepest gratitude to our incredible partners:

  • PennWest University: For their steadfast partnership in bridging higher education with early childhood learning, giving future teachers hands-on classroom experience while providing top-tier education to young children.
  • Desmone Architects & Stone Mile Construction: For designing and building a bright, functional, and joyful space where children can explore and thrive.
  • Local Leaders & Guests: For showing up to celebrate this monumental day alongside us.

Heartfelt Thanks to Our Teachers, Families, and Community

Transitions of this size aren’t always easy. To our dedicated teachers and incredible families: thank you for your patience, flexibility, and grace as we navigated construction schedules, room changes, and transitional logistics. Your trust and support kept our community grounded through every phase of work.

To everyone who joined us for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and to all who have cheered us on from afar, thank you for showing up for our children and our future.

The Doors Are Open. We Have Space for New Friends!

The hard work is behind us, and the best part is just beginning. Our doors are officially open, our classrooms are ready, and we are thrilled to welcome new children and families into our expanded home.
