When we set out to expand and renovate The Rutledge Institute in California, PA, we knew one thing for sure: simply adding extra square footage wasn’t the goal.
We wanted to reimagine what an early childhood learning environment could be. Early childhood isn’t just about sitting at desks- it’s about tactile exploration, emotional regulation, creative movement, and hands-on discovery.
Our brand-new, expanded facility was designed to nurture the whole child– from their big physical moves to their quiet, thoughtful moments- while supporting the dedicated team that guides them every day.
Here is a look inside the specialized spaces that make our new home so extraordinary:
A Dedicated STEM Lab for Big Ideas
Curiosity starts early, and young children are natural scientists. Our new STEM Lab gives little learners a space dedicated entirely to inquiry, building, and problem-solving. Equipped with age-appropriate tools, building materials, and experiment stations, children get to ask “what if?” and test their ideas in a space built for hands-on discovery.
An Art & Music Room Built for Messy Creativity
Creativity needs room to breathe (and sometimes, room to make a little mess!). Our dedicated Art & Music Room allows children to transition into a space specifically tailored for sensory and creative expression. Whether they are exploring brushstrokes on large surfaces, experimenting with rhythm and instruments, or working with clay, this space encourages self-expression without boundaries.
A Children’s Kitchen for Small Hands
Cooking is full of early math, science, and fine motor practice! Our custom Children’s Kitchen is built at the perfect height for young chefs. Here, children learn about nutrition, kitchen safety, follow multi-step directions, measure ingredients, and take pride in preparing their own snacks and culinary creations.
A Sensory Room for Quiet Resets
Learning can be overwhelming at times, and knowing how to pause and regulate emotions is one of the most important skills a child can develop. Our specialized Sensory Room provides a calm, quiet sanctuary equipped with soothing lighting, comfortable textures, and calming tools. It’s a dedicated space where children can step away, reset, and return to their day feeling grounded and ready to learn.
Large-Area Indoor Play Space
Rain or shine, kids need to move! Gross motor development- running, jumping, balancing, and playing – is essential for healthy growth. Our large indoor play space ensures that no matter what the Western PA weather is doing outside, our students have a bright, safe, and spacious environment to burn off energy and build physical strength.
Supporting the Team Behind the Magic
An extraordinary learning environment isn’t complete without extraordinary teachers. As part of our expansion, we prioritized building expanded facilities for our faculty and staff.
By giving our educators comfortable, quiet spaces to collaborate, plan, and recharge, we ensure they have the support they need to bring their absolute best, most energizing selves into the classroom every single day.
